Kenya’s Oscar Selection Committee has announced that Nawi will represent the country in the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.

The 2024 film; has themes of love, identity, and cultural heritage, is a coming-of-age story about a 14-year-old girl in Turkana.

As the young protagonist grapples with the tensions between traditional expectations and the pressures of modern life.

Set against the backdrop of a society at a cultural crossroads, Nawi portrays the girl’s journey as she goes through the challenges of growing up in a community where tradition holds strong.

Her struggles stresses the broader conflict between progress and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Nawi was chosen from a pool of four films submitted for this year’s consideration, beating Searching for AmaniOTIS Janam, and Wamaitha to become Kenya’s official submission.

Premiering in Nairobi on August 24, 2024, Nawi was filmed in early 2023 as part of a collaboration with the NGO Learning Lions, an organization dedicated to empowering youth through digital training.

According to a 2015 UNICEF report, one-third of women in Turkana were married before the age of 18.
